چکیده

Magnetic tape recordings suffer from nonlinear distortions, mainly due to saturation effects. We model the audio signals using a linear Autoregressive (AR) model with additive Gaussian noise and the recording procedure with a nonlinear measurement function. To analyze the nonlinearities we perform measurements on magnetic tape devices in saturation. Due to ferromagnetic effects a nonlinearity with memory has to be considered. For this reason we explore the capabilities of the Preisach model, suitable for hysteretic systems. We have used Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to filter the distorted tape recordings and restore the original audio signal, despite the nonlinearities in the measurements and possibly unknown parameters of the audio signal model. Moreover, the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for combined parameter and state estimation is discussed. Simulations show promising results for restoring distorted audio signals in the near future.

Design and Implementation of Different Audio Restoration Techniques for Audio Denoising Applications

Audio signals are corrupted with many types of distortions. Major audio distortions are categorized into Globalized and Localized distortions. Localized distortion includes clipping and clicks where only certain samples are affected and globalized distortions include broadband noise where complete bandwidth is consumed by noise. Audio restoration is a technique for giving back the audio signals...

Subbands audio signal recovering using neural nonlinear prediction

Audio signal recovery is a common problem in digital audio restoration field, because of corrupted samples that must be replaced. In this paper a subbands architecture is presented for audio signal recovery, using neural nonlinear prediction based on adaptive spline neural networks. The experimental results show the mean square reconstruction error, and maximum error obtained with increasing ga...

Removing preechos from audio recordings

In this contribution, a method is described for the attenuation of preecho in audio recordings. Preechos are attenuated replicas of the future signal that can usually be heard in tape or phonograph recordings in silences or near-silences preceding sudden, high amplitude sounds. The method described here is based on a very simple attenuation+delay preecho model. The delay is estimated by use of ...

Blind Identification of Hammerstein Nonlinear Distortion Models

Compensation of nonlinear distortions is an issue of importance for the restoration of degraded audio material. It however remains a very challenging task, especially in cases when only a single instance of the degraded audio signal is available. Compared to other sources of distortion such as additive noise (hiss) or signal gaps, even the fundamental limits achievable by the restoration are ye...

An Objective and Subjective Comparison of Audio Restoration Systems

This paper presents thc results of a perceptual test to evaluate the quality of different audio restoration algorithms based on Short Time Spectral Attenuation method and on Kalman filter. The protocol by International Communication Union (1TU.R P.800) was used. A set of audio stimuli played with different instruments (i.e. different bandwidths, transients, and timbre) was selected and differen...
